“The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali” is an ancient text comprising 196 short statements about yoga philosophy. There are four chapters that highlight concentration, practice, progress and liberation through theight limbs.

Not much is known about the author, Patanjali, but he is often regarded as “the father of yoga.” Yogis who are interested in the philosophical aspects of yoga have benefited from Patanjali’s care in recording the sutras as they have been passed down through the centuries. Every yoga system in existence has roots in Patanjali’s teachings.

Sutra 1.1 states:

“atha yoganusasanam”

Now begins the precise instruction of yoga.

“It is not mere philosophy that Patanjali is about to expound, but rather direct instruction on how to practice Yoga. Mere philosophy will not satisfy us. We cannot reach the goal by words alone. Without practice, nothing can be achieved.”

Sri Swami Satchindananda

Immediately, it becomes apparent that disciplined practice is an essential element in the study of yoga and that the teachings should be accurate and precise in how they are passed down. Though, this sutra is simply highlighting that we are beginning our practice now. And, should we fall out of practice, we can begin again, as often as we need to. The necessary qualification is simply the interest to learn.

I recently started meditating again, thanks to the encouragement of Terry Coe, an excellent philosophy teacher that lectures at the Yoga Loft a couple of times a year. I’ve developed a renewed sense of discipline, sitting down for 5-30 minutes a day, every day. My intention is to meditate for 90 days straight, long enough to create new pathways through the brain. Perhaps this discipline will even seep into other area of my life! Regardless, it feels good to be committed to something I know is healthy for my well being.

Starting a disciplined practice of almost any kind can be quite challenging. Having a support system can make a world of difference.

What can you commit to for 90 days?
